Awareness Event from Makü on World Migratory Bird Day

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Wildlife Protection, Rehabilitation Application and Research Center, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry 6th Regional Directorate, organized a series of events on the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day.

At the event organized under the theme "Migratory Birds in Gölhisar" at Burdur Gölhisar Lake, 6th Regional Directorate Hunting and Wildlife Branch Manager Tamer Yılmaz, technical staff of Burdur Branch Directorate, Gölhisar DKMP Chief, bird observer Mustafa Erturhan, and MAKÜ students participated.

The Director of the Center, Dr. Lecturer Yasemin Özdemir stated that the theme of World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated with different themes every year, is "Protect Insects, Let Birds Live" this year. Özdemir also mentioned that birds live a life dependent on insects to meet their energy needs, therefore, the relationship between insects and birds is strong.

6th Regional Directorate Hunting and Wildlife Branch Manager Tamer Yılmaz stated that insects provide the necessary energy for migratory birds, and these high-energy food sources in terms of protein are of great importance for migratory birds. He emphasized that the loss of insect population in recent years threatens the survival of birds.

Veterinary Faculty and Biology Department students who participated in the event first visited Gölhisar Lake and had the chance to closely observe species such as the common buzzard and stork, as well as greylag goose, great crested grebe, red fox, coot, great egret, grey heron, and marsh harrier. Then, in the event continued with Kibyra Ancient City, both a city tour and bird observation in the area were conducted with a guide. In the final stage of the program, Veterinary Faculty and Biology Department students participating in the event moved to the Kibyra recreation area in the district and visited the wildlife there.
